Can I still register to vote?
Deadlines have passed in most states, but in 21 states and the District of Columbia you can register on Election Day.
If you're not registered yet, don't give up: it depends on your state.
States where you can register on November 3
You can register and vote on Election Day in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.
You'll usually need to do it in person and show proof of residence. Requirements and locations vary by state, so check your election office's website before you go.
Early voting only
In Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina you can register and vote on the same day, but only during early voting, not on Election Day.
States where the deadline has passed
Everywhere else, registration closed earlier. For example, the deadline in Texas, Arizona and Florida was October 5.
How to confirm your registration
Even if you registered years ago, it's worth checking: records are updated when you move or after periods without voting. Choose your state on vote.gov and follow the link to your election office.
If your name isn't on the list at your polling place, you have the right to ask for a provisional ballot.
